Some of my favorite vampire films part 2

Here is a continuation of some of my top vampire films. Once again, they are in no particular order.

4) Lips Of Blood / Lèvres de sang is a 1975 film written and directed by the late, great Jean Rollin, who created many amazing, and very unique vampire films.  Lips Of Blood has many of the same themes as the aforementioned Franco films. A beautiful, poetic film about time, memory, desire, love, and loss. One of my favorite Rollin films, as well as one of my favorite vampire films of all time, Lips Of Blood captures nostalgia, longing, and the melancholy of true love. Like the previously covered Franco films, this is one of the best.  Highly recommended.

5) Nadja is a 1994 film written and directed by the great Michael Almereyda. An existential masterpiece shot in black & white film and pixelvision video. Another moody, melancholic gem that perfectly captures the human condition. A must see.

6) Vampire Femmes is a 1999 SOV film written and directed by the magnificent Tim Sullivan. A dark vampire film noir with great characters. Check out my full review on this very blog

Some of my favorite vampire films Part 1

Here are some of my top vampire films. They are in no particular order, as they are all wonderful films from each filmmaker. I'll start with three from the late, great Jess Franco, and starring his wife / muse Lina Romay.

1) Female Vampire / La Comtesse Noire / Erotikill / Bare Breasted Countess is a 1973 film written, photographed, and directed by Jess Franco. It is a  masterpiece of longing, desire, time, love, and loss. A hazy, dreamlike meditation of sex and death, punctuated by a beautiful, piano laden music score by Daniel White, which enhances Franco's melancholy mood of the film.   Available in different versions, ranging from the 'blood' version to an explicitly sexual cut.

2) Doriana Grey / Die Marquise von Sade / Das Bildnis der Doriana Gray is a 1976 film written, photographed, and directed by Jess Franco.  A companion piece of sorts to Female Vampire, Doriana Grey / Das Bildnis der Doriana Gray is another sex and death masterwork, once again, exploring the themes of longing, desire, time, love, and loss.  An existential exploration of the dualism of being. Life / death. Light / dark. Conscious / unconscious. This is another one that I highly recommend, but beware it is very sexually explicit.

3) Vampire Blues is a 1999 shot on video film written and directed by Jess Franco, which serves as the third film, making these pictures a trilogy of sorts. With the same themes as both the previous films, Franco uses some interesting solarizing effects to create some outstanding images. Another highly recommended piece of cinema, but once again, beware the sex content is pretty strong.
